This might be weird for some (even for me), but apparently salty coffee is now becoming popular in Taiwan. Why? It is because salt can actually reduce bitterness in coffee. Wow, who would have thought huh?

“It gives you three tastes. First, you get the slightly salty taste from the cold cream foam, second, the mixed taste of the salty cream foam and hot coffee, third, the aroma of coffee,” according to the China Daily. Salt can moderately reduce bitterness in coffee. But be careful, of course, as you might actually put more than what is needed to imbibe the bitter taste of coffee beans. The Starbucks iced coffee is described as a “Starbucks Terraza Blend, served chilled and slightly sweetened on ice.”

But if you can’t get the freshest coffee beans in your place, try the few pointers that the Atlantic Food Channel gave recently for selecting the freshest coffee beans from your local store.

If coffee is properly packaged in a valve bag (those with small internal buttons and slits), it will probably taste better than bulk beans. Smell the coffee beans through the valve and evaluate whether it smells like fresh ground or whole beans.

If you supermarket, however, is the…
