
Most of us don’t know that a lot of our foods contain palm oil—a common food additive that is billed as cholesterol-free. It has a lot of uses, from processed foods to cosmetics, and it is highly marketable to consumers despite being a saturated fat.
However, there’s a downside to all of these. Growing and harvesting palm oil can wreak havoc on the tropical forests where it is grown. So although palm oil is a good source of vitamins E and A, beta-carotene and lycopene, France’s Group Casino supermarkets recently pledged that they would cut off palm oil from about 200 of their food products.
