My cousin will always put soy sauce in any food she eats. Whether it may be fried, sautéed or what not, she would knowingly pour soy sauce over it to give it “more taste”  while the health conscious part of me would scream at her for eating “too salty.”

But just recently, scientists found out that adding soy sauce to food can reduce its salt content without necessarily sacrificing the flavor. Substituting soy sauce to salad dressings and soup can drop the food’s salt content from 17 percent to up to 50 percent.

Diet sometimes means eating foods that are probably low in calorie but rich in salt. In that sense, the…

I’m not a big fan of herbs. Aside from the occasional mint in my iced tea, I never really like putting herbs in food (yes, even rosemary in my roasted chicken). I find their taste rather overpowering. But basils are of the different kind. I remember eating Thai rice once with fresh whole basil leaves in them. The taste is simply divine.

Basils are usually combined with tomato and mozzarella although I never had an inkling of eating it when it’s used as toppings for pizza. Here are some more recipes where you can use basils: Watermelon-Basil Martinis and Mint Juleps, Genovese Minestrone, Pear, Basil, and Pecorino Toscano Salad, Flat Pasta…

Each one of us has different stress levels, and we also have different causes of where our stresses are coming from. May it be from waiting in line, saying yes to your boss when you actually say no, being with a group of people you don’t like to be with or simply being caught in a traffic jam—all these contribute greatly to the fact that all of us needs to take a little break from the everyday routine of our lives.

The first level, according to Rosa Smith-Montanaro, a virtual wellness and weight loss coach, is to free yourself from emails, news, etc. Then, address all your chronic stressors, and finally…

Forcing your family to eat healthy is not a simple 1-2-3. Most often than not, it involves cajoling on your part and a series of arguments to force them to take a bite off a healthy salad greens, or even a simply protein-rich casserole. Children especially like fried things too much that they refuse to eat anything that are not deep fried in oil.

So, here are simple ways to make your family eat healthier:

1. Start by adding gradually-increasing amounts of vegetables to your casseroles, stews and meat dishes. The idea is to avoid the inevitable resistance by sneaking the good food into your meals.
2. To increase your family’s fiber intake,…

Surprisingly, the US Food and Drug Adminstration (I just found out) have little jurisdiction to regulate bottled water in the country. While town waters are required to publish reports in water testing, bottled water companies, on the other hand, are not required to do so.

A recent report by the Environmental Working Group found that less than 2 percent of popular bottled waters in the country are revealing where they are getting the water, how it was being purified and the possible chemical pollutants it contain.

And unlike tap water, “bottled water doesn’t have to be tested by a certified laboratory.” They are also not required to inform customers within 24 hours…
