Women receiving the birth control shot, Depo Provera, may see unwanted weight gain in the long run, a study found out. Depo Provera, or depot medroxyprogesterone - DMPA, is a low-cost birth control given by injection every three months.

The study led by Dr. Abbey Berenson found out that women who gain weight after the shot are more likely to continue gaining even if doctors tell you repeatedly that it has no weight gain effect. The findings, where 195 women participated, are published in Obstetrics & Gynecology. According to Reuters, “Women who were not obese to begin with, as well as those who had already had children, were at relatively higher…

Most people get fat not because they eat too much but because they lack exercise. And most people’s reason of not having the time to do some situps or crunches is also untrue. The truth is, people in the past years have become so addicted to trivial things that they are failing again and again to pull themselves together and actually do something healthy for their bodies.

So here now are five exercises for “lazy people:”

1. Upon arriving at home, change into something that will make your sports spirit alive. Either a t-shirt or jogging pants from your previous alma mater would help. It would also be good if you’re into…

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 dried pasilla chiles, stems and seed removed, cut into 1-inch strips

Cravings are usually understood as weaknesses for some people (especially women). But health counselor Beth Aldrich explains that cravings are also triggers for your body to analyze your relationship with food.

Here are eight primary reasons for cravings, according to Aldrich:

1. Dehydration

Dehydration occurs as mild hunger, so the first thing to do when you get a strange craving is to drink a full glass of water.

2. Lack of life fulfillment

Eating can be used as a substitute for entertainment, or to fill the void of life fulfillment.

3. Yin/yang imbalance

Certain foods have more yin qualities (expansive) while other foods have more yang qualities (contractive). Eating foods that are either extremely yin or extremely…

The life-long affair between pasta and tomato sauce has been proven over and over throughout the decades. The variations lie only on what is included in the sauce. I have always loved seafood pasta, personally. But I have never tried this particular dish until only recently. And surprisingly, I was caught off-guard by how comforting it is.

Here’s a recipe from Pasta Fresca.

Ingredients: (serves 4 to 6)

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

1 onion, finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

10 fresh basil leaves, chopped

Small handful chopped Italian parsley

1 pound ground pork (or mild Italian sausage, casings removed)

1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes

Generous pinch saffron

1 can (28-ounce) whole tomatoes, crushed by hand

Salt to taste

1 pound pasta,…

It’s human nature for us to eat what our friends have also decided on having for lunch or even dinner. I have always been a victim of ordering the exact same thing as my friend does. So it goes to show that women (even men) bond the best over a basket of french fries and chicken wings.

A new study published in Appetite confirms that the people around us influence the way we eat, and what we eat. In a study of college students, it was found out that women eat food with lesser calories when they are in the company of guys. And they eat even less when more men…

A study found out that rats fed with huge amount of sugar (fructose) develop problems with memory, or most commonly referred to as spatial memory. This refers to a person’s ability to navigate a familiar place (like the way rats find their way out of mazes).

In the experiment, rats were fed a high fructose diet for 19 weeks then they were trained in a maze for 3 days, totaling to 8 trials per day. Forty eight hours later, the rats’ mental retention was tested.

Published in the journal, Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, the results show rats that are high on fructose diet posted a longer time of figuring out which…

I’m not much a big fan of vegetables. But for healthy eaters, this dish would be an instant pick up. For those who don’t know, Orzo is very small, only slightly larger than a rice grain. It also cooks the same way. This pasta dish, however, is a little plain for my taste but I am sure lots of people would find this interesting for the slightly sweet and tangy combination of lemon and cherry tomatoes.

Here’s a recipe from Mayo Clinic Website:

Ingredients: (serves 2 to 3)

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved

1 clove garlic, minced

1 cup orzo

2 cups chicken stock

2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped

2 teaspoons capers, drained and minced

1 tablespoon…

I’m not much of a heavy fruit eater. I usually content myself with main dishes, or desserts, rather than eat fruits. It’s just not my thing. But aside from strawberries, I can eat peaches (if I really have no choice). Because peaches are now in season, here are a few good tips on how you can choose the right one.

When in the market, choose one that has a slight tint of orange and yellow to them, and handle them carefully on your way home. Peaches are easily bruised. If they are fully ripe, store them in the fridge. You can eat them at room temperature. The flesh should be firm…
