Over the past three decades, there has been a sharp increase in the number of overly. obese kids, a recent report said. One in every twenty kids is now obese.

The findings, published in the journal of Academic Pediatrics, used government data from an ongoing health survey with 12,384 Americans aged 2 to 19 years old as their participants. It was found out that since 1976, the rate of severe obesity has tripled. So between 1999 and 2004, some 3.8 percent of children were considered to be severely obese. That’s a ratio of one for every twenty kids.

Here are some factors as to why kids are becoming increasingly obese these days:

I am really never a fan of sardines. I can neither eat them alone, with rice, and more so in between slices of breads. But when I stumbled upon this recipe, I immediately took notice of how the combination might work for my palette.

Ingredients: (serves 3)

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

2 small shallots, minced (onion will do in a pinch)

1 garlic clove, minced or pressed

1 14-ounce can whole tomatoes, drained and chopped

1/4 teaspoon pimentón

1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

1/4 teaspoon light brown sugar

1 tin sardines packed in olive oil, about 4 ounces; I prefer skinless and boneless here

6 slices multigrain sandwich bread

1/4 cup fresh goat cheese, ricotta, or…

Remember the time where you can pull out your jeans without having to open the buttons? That is exactly where this work out will try to take you again (although not skinny enough where your jeans will be too loose for you to wear).

The Skinny Jeans Workout by Lisa Grimmer is programmed to work specifically on the core, butt and thighs. Grimmer said that the exercise program will work out anything that is inside your pants. A recent testimonial from CNN said that “It’s different than your typical workout class. It’s not high-impact cardio, but you’re sweating the whole time because you’re working every muscle group.”

The program works…

Just yesterday, a friend treated me to a Japanese restaurant offering their new Spicy Honey Glazed Chicken. And I must admit that although I am not a big fan of Japanese food, I immediately went nuts over this new dish (provided that it’s not anywhere near authentic Japanese dishes).

Here’s a recipe I got from my blog hopping.

2 cloves garlic, pressed

1/8 tsp red pepper flakes, more or less to taste

green onions, chopped (optional)

slivered almonds (optional)**

There are many varieties of corn. From Japan to Thailand to Taiwan and even in the Philippines, corn has been exceptionally popular in the Asian regions. And now that summer is fast coming up in the West, corns will once again rule meal tables with its simple dishes. You can grill them, or include them in salads, soups and pastas.

The problem with corn is that is usually looses its sweetness once it’s picked. It’s sugar will soon convert to starch, so make sure you have plans of eating the corns right after picking them. For fresh corn, look for bright green, moist husks with a golden brown tassel. Also try…

The one thing most people forget about meal replacements is that you don’t have to eat a meal once you garbled a whole glass of meal replacement shake. Why? Because it doesn’t work that way. Meal replacements mean you need not eat breakfast, lunch or dinner since you have already “replaced” those.

Eat only one of each–meal replacement or actual meal–because eating (or drinking) both can make you gain weight instead of lose them. A study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that restricting food consumptions for meal replacements helps people lose weight.

There are two groups researchers experimented with: one group had a diet of shakes, entrees,…

Are you tired of pairing up your coffee with regular pastries like biscotti and scones? Here’s a new thing for you to try out with your cup of coffee: the juustoleipä.

Also called leipäjuusto, this Finnish-made product is a slab of “bread cheese” cut into strips or cubes. The common misconception about this product is that it actually contains bread. It does not. The curds, which are usually from cow’s or reindeer’s milk, are grilled or baked. This is the one that gives the cheese a brown, bread-like color on top.

You can get this from your local markets, and try experimenting with it by dipping it into coffee. The cheese is…

I have always loved the aroma of freshly made crepes. Whether it is upon waking up in the morning or in the middle of the day as I shop, crepes have a wonderful feeling of French and Italian sidestreet patisseries. It’s like little Europe in your kitchen, or in some cases, rightly smack in the middle of a mall.

Here is a recipe of my favorite variant of crepe–Mango.

Ingredients: (serves

1/2 cup mango jam

2 Tablespoons unsalted butter

2 Tablespoons orange liquor

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 eggs

1/2 cup low-fat milk

1/2 cup water

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons melted butter

Procedure:

- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the jam, butter and liquor.

- Stir occassionally until well blended.…

I grew up putting Nutella on every known pastry on my kitchen–be it bread, a simple mamon, pancakes or what not. I have always find ways to put it on anything edible–even crackers.

Gianduia, for those of you who don’t know, is an Italian chocolate-hazelnut confectionary where Nutella was based upon. High-end gianduias is made of 50 percent hazelnut, and is considered to be more superior in taste than the bottled spread of Nutella. J.C. Reid from Houston Press’ Eating Our Words said that comparing Nutella to the gianduia is like comparing apples to oranges. “They are born from the same tradition, but the resulting flavor profiles are very different,” he…
