Palm Oil

Most of us don’t know that a lot of our foods contain palm oil—a common food additive that is billed as cholesterol-free. It has a lot of uses, from processed foods to cosmetics, and it is highly marketable to consumers despite being a saturated fat.

However, there’s a downside to all of these. Growing and harvesting palm oil can wreak havoc on the tropical forests where it is grown. So although palm oil is a good source of vitamins E and A, beta-carotene and lycopene, France’s Group Casino supermarkets recently pledged that they would cut off palm oil from about 200 of their food products. After all, palm oil is nothing but saturated fat.

Palm oil has a host of other consumer applications, pushing some companies and even industries to pop up all over the world. The problem is palm oil plantations can lead to massive deforestation.

This is a touchy subject, but I’m sure lots of us are also becoming increasingly aware of the consequences our actions have on the environment.
