In Season: Melons

Melons are freshy fruits that some also considers as “culinary vegetables.” They are usually in season at this time of the year, and they can be found fresh in farmer’s market or the like. Although the weight of the melons may make you think twice about buying them and taking them to your apartment, its sweetness, however, is one of a kind.

To choose for the right variety of melon, look for a smooth, firm texture on top of the melon. The bottom part, meanwhile, should have a creamy yellow color. The bigger and more yellow the color is, the better melon it will be. The melon should be at the right weight, meaning that it should feel heavy for its size. For storage, put them in room temperature until they are ready to be chilled, rinsed and eaten.

Melons are especially delicious in iced fruit juices or shakes. They are also good in smoothies and aguas frescas. Here are some melon recipes you can try: Mississippi Watermelon-Basil Martini, Watermelon-Ginger Margarita, Melon and Mozzarella Salad with Rose Water Vinaigrette and Crisp Prosciutto, Watermelon, Feta, and Arugula Salad, Roasted Cantaloupe Soup, Iced Cantaloupe Soup with Jalapeño and Basil and Watermelon Pico de Gallo.
