Aside from being skinny, thin and obese, there’s a new term for weight watchers—normal weight obese. This means that those who have normal BMI and weight actually have high ratio of fat to lean muscle. This increases their risk of health problems.
According to a new study, some 30 million Americans can be categorized under this new term. They have high risk of having obesity-related illnesses like diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease.
Here are some things you can do:
* Realize that losing weight isn’t enough.
* Exercise–especially weight lifting and resistance training is essential for cardiovascular health, and to build lean body mass.
* Forget about the weighing scales.
* Instead use a tape measure to check your waist circumference. Women should aim for less than 35 inches, and men should aim for less than 40 inches.
* For body fat percentage, below 30 percent for women, and less than 20 to 25 percent for men is considered healthy.
Remember that being skinny and looking good doesn’t mean you’re healthy and that you won’t get diseases. Remember that fats play a crucial role in protecting your body from certain illnesses.
