Ouch! Gastric Bypass May Increase Risk of Kidney Stones

Since Carnie Wilson and Star Jones underwent the knife for gastric bypass (in hopes, of course, of shedding off some unwanted pounds), it suddenly became an instant diet method in the eyes of many body-conscious people. With gastric bypass, however, comes a big price to pay. Research has found out that undergoing this particular surgery can cause illnesses to people like hernia, infection and malnutrition.

And what’s even more disheartening about the side effects of gastric bypass is the possibility of having kidney stones because of it. Kidney stones are no laughing matter. the combination of oxalate and calcium to make little clusters result to kidney stones. This could then get stuck in your urinary tract. And trying to pee them out often require surgery.

In an article published in the Journal of Urinology, experts found that gastric bypass can increases the risk of kidney stones to up to 8 percent. Weight loss surgeries like the gastric bypass may, therefore, interfere with calcium absorption–a building block for kidney stones.

Taking care of your kidneys is one step to ensure you’re going to live a healthy and fulfilling life. Drinking water will protect your kidneys from all sorts of ailments. But trying to find a solution to your weight problems, and risking your own health, is not the way to go and enjoy life to the fullest. Start by taking care of your body in the inside, maybe then you’ll see how this could affect the way you look at yourself. A thin body, remember, does not equate to healthy living.
