Many Diabetics Not Following Healthy Eating Guidelines

If you’re a diabetic, better read on. A new study found out that most Americans with type 2 diabetes are getting a healthy diet since they are eating too much salt and fat, and not enough low-fat dairy, grains, fruits and veggies.

The study, which was published in the American Dietetic Association Journal, examined the diets of 2,800 obese and overweight patients with diabetes. The results showed that 85 percent of the participants are eating too much saturated fats while 93 percent are eating too much sodium (salt) in their diet. It furthermore found out people with diabetes are not adopting healthier diets.

Dr. Mara C. Vitolins, the lead researcher, explained that: “I thought we were going to find people who, because they have a chronic disease, were more educated about and more motivated than the average American to eat healthy, but that’s not the case. The findings clearly illustrate a need to provide ongoing nutrition education for people with diabetes regardless of the amount of time they’ve had the disease.”

I think the problem lies on people having trouble to motivate themselves enough to adapt a healthy diet. Even those who are suffering from diabetes are having a hard time to follow a healthy lifestyle for themselves. The best thing to do is set your minds into fulfilling and following a lifestyle that will be beneficial for your health in the future.
