I’m not a very fit person, to say the least. But I do like to run a lot since it gives me an adrenaline boost. It also makes me feel like I have lost an enormous amount of weight.

According to the wisdom-du-jour, any form of cardio—like long slow distance and running—is destructive to the body. Some books also accuse slow long-distance running of causing debilitating joint pain.

An article from the New York Times also suggests that humans are more suited with running long distances. Here’s what it says:

* Marathon participation is up 20% from the beginning of the decade, with over 425,000 people in the US crossing finish lines.

* Much…

Every time I finish eating, I cap my lunch or dinner off with about one hour of standing or just slowly walking around the house or park. Why? Because I have this nagging feeling that when I sit down, my belly would get big the next day.

Then, this feeling got even more support from a recent study that found the enzyme called lipase was responsible in adding more fat when we sit down all day. This fat-absorbing enzyme turns off when you’re sitting down, so it does not absorb the circulating fat. Instead, it turns it into body fat.

Now, here are some useful tips to help you get off that…

Recent studies have shown that exercising has little or no impact at all to losing weight, which is an antithesis to what health experts have been saying for the last decade that people who want to lose weight should exercise.

The benefits, however, of exercising have been proven to be substantial. And well-documented studies have shown that exercising can reduce depression and even manage diabetes.

A recent research from Mayo Clinic said that: “Most studies have demonstrated no or modest weight loss with exercise alone . . . patients should have realistic expectations, an exercise regimen . . . is unlikely to result in short-term weight loss beyond what is achieved with…

I am not a big follower of the bodybuiling industry, but debates have since reached me regarding the benefits of single or multiple sets.

Single set training, or high-intensity training, is characterized by maximal efforts performed in one set while multiple set training (also called volume training), “is lifting which involves multiple sets of usually sub-maximal efforts.” Obviously, all of us have a different take on which one’s better. There are factors that must be taken into consideration, of course, like different needs, goals and different amounts of periodization methods.

But then a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research helps us understand better what the big debate is…

Let’s get to the point: here’s a simple weight loss technique that all dieters out there should be doing–weigh only during Mondays and Fridays. Why? Read on…

Many dieters adhere to their diet plans from Monday to Fridays but it is during weekends where many food trippings and outing are done. Thus, diet cheaters would always find themselves gaining weight after the weekend (without them realizing it). If you’re one of those persons who only weighs during Mondays, you would believe that you are never losing any pounds because of the weight you gain over the course of one weekend. This then will encourage you to try harder with your diet…

Based on the numerous articles I have read about the effects of losing weight to health, I am not surprised that a new study has just found out that losing weight had a positive impact on people suffering from kidney diseases.

According to the study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology, kidney patients who lost weight has lower levels of proteinuria (protein in the urine - a key feature of kidney disease). The study also found out that “losing weight through surgery also assisted” obese patients who didn’t yet have kidney disease, but whose kidney had already filtered waste products unusually fast (a risk factor for kidney…

Do you know how many calories you could have burned if you are only doing some exercises while watching your favorite shows on TV? Probably a hundred, if not thousands. If people could only learn how to multitask–i.e., watching TV while doing some fitness regime–then maybe there’s a better hope for all of us wanting to lose some excess weight.

Here are helpful suggestions on how we can maximize our time:

- If you’re fortunate enough to have an elliptical trainer, or a stationary bike use it through the first half of the program.

- Do mini bursts of cardio on an aerobic step for the length of one commercial break.

- Grab some…

Lots of middle-aged women always say that it is perfectly okay to gain weight for their age since it cannot be removed that their lifestyles, and their body’s metabolism, have changed throughout the years. We call it the middle-age spread. But according to a recent study, those extra pounds may cause the chances of women for a long and healthy life to shorten.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, discusses the connection between weight gain and life expectancy. They found that the more weight a woman gain in her middle-age life, the less likely she will be healthy and disease-free in the long run (after age 70).

The key to…

I might have to take a good long sitdown with this one since it contains enough information about what to avoid when I’m old and gray and grumpy.

A new study found out that women who gain weight during their middle age may have worst hot flashes as they are approaching their menopausal stage. For four years, scientists measured the hormone levels of more than 1,600 women, ages 47 to 59, together with their body fat percentage and frequency of hot flashes.

What they found out is that women who gained weight were 1.23 times “more likely to report hot flashes.” The link was ironclad even when hormone levels were considered.

The study,…
