Your food intake affects how healthy your skin is going to be. The amount and kind of food you take inside your body eventually leads to how good (or bad) you will look in the outside.

Forget the lotions and other skin-beautifying products, a healthy and balanced diet is what you really need to keep that skin looking good.

Here are six simple steps to keep your skin healthy:

  • Stay Well Hydrated

Keeping your body well topped up with fluid will go a long way in maintaining healthy looking skin.

  • Choose Healthy Carbs

If your diet’s packed to the brim with refined carbohydrates how can you expect your skin to look its best?

  • Avoid Too…

Don’t Be Tricked By Food Labels

Nutritional information in food labels usually stated how healthy their products are. That, of course, is the marketing strategy of most food companies. What most of us don’t know is that we are sometimes fooled into buying “healthy” food products when in truth, they contain the very things we avoid.

Too often, unhealthy ingredients like high fructose corn syrup undermine the truly nutritional stuff in the food. Most of us don’t know that by simply patronizing food that contain ingredients like corn syrup, we are inadvertently adding calories into our own bodies.

Most manufacturers list corn syrup (in juice items, for example) first, meaning the food contains the bulk of the first…

Last week, major restaurant chains announced that they are planning to include the number of calories each of the food contains in their menus.

Restaurants with 20 or more locations will now post each food’s calorie count in their menu. They will also include other nutrition information such as sugar, salt and cholesterol. Thankfully, the move is going to be supported by big chain restaurants like Red Lobster and Olive Garden.

Congress, in fact, is actually thinking of pushing into law the menu labeling in health reform legislation. This will be discussed in Congress in the coming weeks. The law is said to be supported by both Republicans and Democrats.

I’m not a big vegetable lover. Aside from cabbage, onions and a few others, I don’t normally eat what you call green, leafy vegetables. I’m really more of a seafood eater if I wanted to be on the healthy side.

This dish is perfect for a summer solstice. Packed with sautéed spinach and accented by fresh herbs, these fritters come together perfectly to partner with a main Italian dish or it can also be eaten alone on its own—for appetizers or what not.

Frittelle Di Spinaci (makes 8 to 10 fritters, depending on size)

Ingredients:

1 pound fresh, mature spinach
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon olive oil (not extra-virgin) plus more for frying the fritters
1 medium…

My uncle has been suffering from gout for more than five years. That’s why we were always careful about the kind of foods we cook and serve here in the house. Gout is a very painful type of arthritis, and is sometimes referred to as the “disease of kings” because it is commonly associated with rich men and rich food. And as the American population becomes older and heavier, cases of this disease have also started to climb up the ladder.

Two to six million American men suffer from gout. Although women can get gout too, they are four times less likely to suffer from it; probably because of the protective…

Chinese cuisine is my most absolute favorite food in this world. There’s nothing more comforting or fulfilling for me than Chinese foods (yes, even takeouts sound good for me). There’s something about the Chinese use of five-spice powder and sesame oil that adds more life to a simple dish.

Flax, also known as linseed, is a member of the genus Linum. It is native to the region from eastern Mediterranean to India. It is an erect annual plant growing 1.2 m tall with slender stems. The fruit is a round, dry capsule 5 to 9 mm diameter, containing several glossy brown seeds shaped like an apple.

According to Michael Davis, an executive chef, the benefits of flax are astounding. It can: reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, keeps platelets from getting sticky, reduces the risk of breast cancer and diabetes and prevent eye diseases.

It does not come as a wonder that flax is referred to as the modern miracle food. It’s…

A study published in the Obesity Journal suggests that obese people have a different physical response to food than average food eaters. Most of us don’t know the reasons why people overeat so, this study is a good source for us to realize why we sometimes eat more than what our body needs.

The study involved placing lemon juice and water on the participants’ tongues then measuring through cotton swabs the amount of saliva produced over time. It found out that most obese individuals salivate more than the usual. They have longer response to a new taste than those people with normal weight.

Dr. Bond, the study’s primary author says that: “Saliva…
