If you think salads are more diet-friendly than Big Macs, think again. Researchers have recently found out that pre-made salads can actually be packing more calories and fats than one order of Big Mac from McDonalds.

Researchers from Which? magazine revealed that Smedleys Atlantic Prawn Marie Rose Salad (300 grams) contains 855 calories and 66.3 grams of fat compared with a Big Mac that has 820 calories and 40 grams of fat.

Manufacturers were accused of bringing erroneous information in their labels. For example, one tuna sandwich (350 grams) was said to be packing only 550 calories, but it was later found out that the calorie count given in the label was…

Rather than cubing your carrots or mashing them to a pulp before eating eat, why don’t you try boiling it whole then afterwards eating it as is? A recent study found out that boiled whole carrots has more nutrients compared with other cooking procedure.

Boiling carrots whole particularly has more falcarinol, an anti-cancer compound. The study was made by Dr. Kirsten Brandt of Newcastle University in UK. They are also the team that found out the anti-cancer components of carrots four years ago (this will be published later this week).

Their studies recently revealed that:

  • Heating carrots kills the cells, meaning they retain more water. This increases the concentration of falcarinol.
  • However, the heating…

I may not be much an advocate of dieting stuff but I sure can tell when something can help us lose weight, or at least bit our food cravings to dust. I know, in theory, that chewing gum can also be a cause to lose weight, but I never thought that some experts have been thinking along the same line as I do.

Chewing gum may increase serotonin, increase alertness and concentration, improve ability to learn and study and even burn an additional 11 calories per hour, which is what we’re really after right? Also, sugar-free gum containing xylitol reduces bacteria in the mouth, and can even reduce plaque and cavities.

Health experts have recently found out that drinking green tea may help prevent prostate cancer from developing. Green tea, according to research, has many benefits including stopping Alzheimer’s disease, reducing the negative effect of cholesterol and preventing cancer. However, these are mostly unproven theories.

Globally, tea market is worth $941 million, with green tea comprising some 20 percent of that amount. In popular coffee shops, we can also usually find the proliferation of green tea-based drinks, making it now widely popular to even coffee drinkers like me.

Published in the Cancer Prevention Research journal, 26 men (aged 41 to 72), consumed green tea for 34 days, and were found to have “significant…

If I can consume one drink for the rest of my life, I’d probably go with Starbucks’ Iced Coffee. The stuff just tastes heavenly to me. There’s nothing like cold coffee to get me through a day of grueling work.

But unless you order an unsweetened version of your normally sugar-laden iced coffee from Starbucks then, you’re going to get approximately around 90 calories per syrup shot. And believe me, Starbucks doesn’t put just one shot of it in your cup. Do you think your coffee would taste heavenly without sugar in it?

The Starbucks iced coffee is described as a “Starbucks Terraza Blend, served chilled and slightly sweetened on ice.”

The perennial belief that fruit drinks can reduce hunger much more than milk can now be officially scratched. Fruit drinks (although some of them actually came from real fruits mostly contain a large dose of sugar to improve its taste).

Fruits drinks are different from fruit juice, remember. While they have the same main ingredient—fruit—they also have a large difference when it comes to its other contents. Juice, however, is freshly squeezed while drinks usually come in large tetra packs.

Recently, Australian scientists tested fruit drinks against milk, and found out that milk can reduce hunger more than fruit drinks can.

Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found out (in…

Recently, The New York Times published a report on diet pill supplements than can allegedly reduce hunger, or help you feel satisfied for longer. There are a couply of studies by a certain Dr. Hirsch, a neurologist, psychiatrist and the founder of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago.

Hirsch’s study of 3,193 patients who he let inhale an aromatic scent whenever they feel hungry, found out that each of the participant lost 5 lbs a month. A later study again revealed that because of aromatic scent granules, dieters can lose approximately 5 lbs a month.

Remember that if you are having heavy cold, you also cannot smell things…
